A portrait is the most intimate of all paintings — a direct encounter between the artist’s eye and another soul, real or imagined. RD Riccoboni’s portraiture spans the full range of human expression: from vivid likenesses of real individuals to bold fantasy characters born entirely from the artist’s imagination.

Among them are figures from his original sci-fi saga, Knights of the Vermillion Rose — warriors, visionaries, and heroes rendered with the same painterly intensity as any living subject. Also here are the Beartropolis series — fantastical flyover maps of imaginary bear cities, where whimsy and world-building collide. In Riccoboni’s hands, every face has a story, and every story deserves to be painted. Created at the artist’s historic studio at Spanish Village Art Center in Balboa Park, San Diego, California.
